Michael Late Benedum Chapter of AAPL Reaches 1,300^th Member Milestone

The MLBC is pleased to announce that our association has surpassed 1,300 members with the addition of new signups in December.  This recent addition marks a milestone for the Benedum Chapter, which has more than doubled its membership since the beginning of 2010.

The Michael Late Benedum Chapter of the AAPL was formed in Pittsburgh, PA on July 17^th of 1959.  Today the Michael Late Benedum Chapter of the AAPL is a dynamic organization with members from many areas throughout the Appalachian Basin. Particular emphasis is placed on ethics, education and social networking.

Fall 2011 Nemacolin Golf Outing

The MLBC Fall Golf Outing was held at beautiful Mystic Rock Golf Course, part of the Nemacolin Woodlands Resort, followed by a reception, dinner meeting and prizes. The event was coordinated by Brandon Ward and Steve Carr of T.S. Dudley Land Company, Inc. After a weeklong storm rolled through the area, blue skies cleared the way for all 148 golfers to enjoy a day of catching up with clients or old friends, and trying to hit the ball around the bru-tal PGA proven Mystic Rock.

Prizes in an amount exceeding $17,000 were given away at this year’s event due to our generous sponsors, with over 40 golf enthusiasts leaving with more than they arrived with. Prizes included cash, flat screen LED televisions, drivers, iron sets, putters, and other golf related items.

Due to the high demand for this year’s registration, the MLBC expects next year’s event to fill two squads of golfers and utilize both courses. We look forward to next year’s event! Below are a few pictures taken during the golf outing. Additional pictures are availa-ble on the MLBC website.

Jud Byrd Pronounced Honorary Member

At the May 12, 2011 Michael Late Benedum Chapter (MLBC) meeting in Oglebay Park, Wheeling, WV the MLBC recognized the decades of work, service and dedication that Jud Byrd has provided to the MLBC by pronouncing Jud Byrd an honorary member of the MLBC and by presenting Jud with a plaque declaring the appreciation of the MLBC for Jud’s decades long service to the Benedum Chapter.

Jud Byrd became a member of the MLBC in 1980 after starting his career as a Landman in 1977 with the small independent producing company, Stocker & Sitler Oil Company, in Newark, Ohio. Jud has served the MLBC by holding every official position in the MLBC, including President and Regional Director. Jud has also served on and been Chairman of several Committees in the MLBC. Jud’s service and experience is one of the big reasons why the 51 year old MLBC has been so successful at continually serving the needs of Landmen in the Appalachian Basin.

Jud is a married to his wife of 35 years, Suzanna, and is the father of three boys. Jud’s son, Justin, is a Landman and Jud’s brother, Brad Byrd, is a CPL Landman. Jud is a Business Administration graduate of The Ohio State University class of 1975. He is a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving overseas in 1972-1974. He excels at golf, fishing and sporting clays. He has been a Land Manager at Stocker & Sitler Oil Company, CGAS Exploration, Inc. and EnerVest Operating, L.L.C. and is currently the President of Flint Ridge Energy, Ltd. in Newark, Ohio.

MLBC Donates $3,500.00 to GSC Scholarship Fund

The Michael Late Benedum Chapter of the AAPL presented a check for $3,500.00 to the Glenville State College Landman Program in support of the scholarship fund for the 2011-2012 academic year.  Dennis Pounds, Vice President for College Advancement and Executive Director of the GSC Foundation, was on hand to accept the donation.

The MLBC has been very supportive of the program in the recruitment of both faculty and scholarships. They have provided encouragement, guidance and financial support when needed. To date the MLBC has provided $11,500.00 in scholarships to the GSC Landman Program. The money has been helpful, but more importantly it is knowledge that the industry provides and the support in becoming professionals that is most important to the students.

MLBC 3rd Annual Charity Golf Outing

The MLBC held its 3rd Annual Charity Golf Event benefitting WVU Children’s Hospital on Oglebay Resort’s Palmer Course in Wheeling, WV on Thursday, May 12, 2011. The morning rain, which ceased shortly before the shotgun start, couldn’t stop the 120 golfers from showing their support and enjoying a day on the links.

Following several hours of slices and shanks, missed four-foot putts and four-letter words, the golfers joined up with the rest of the membership at the dinner meeting and awards presentation held at Hess Shelter on Oglebay grounds. After an excellent spread of grilled swordfish, NY strip steak, BBQ chicken and many sides, Alyson Hehr, a “graduate” from WVU Children’s Hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), and her mother Renee Marchese told their story of how important WVU Children’s Hospital is to the state of West Virginia and surrounding areas.

The highlight of the evening came as the MLBC presented a $14,000.00 check to Bobby Nicholas of the WVU Children’s Hospital. Additional donations totaling $3,750.00 came in after the event bringing the total to $17,750.00. 100% of the golf sponsorship money donated by generous members and member companies was given directly to the Children’s Hospital.

In just three years the MLBC has contributed nearly $37,000.00 to the hospital for programs such as “Songs of Love”, where parents who are unable to be with their child during the NICU stay are able to record themselves singing or reading so the recording can be played at the infants bedside.
